  • The Perito Moreno Glacier is one of only three glaciers in Argentina that continues to grow. The Patagonian ice fields are the most humid place in the world; snow falls over ice on one end while ice breaks off into the lake at the other. The glacier is in equilibrium.

  • An ice bridge can form that acts as a natural dam between the glacier and the rock; one side of the lake then can rise above the other. Every few years, when water breaks through the barrier, it causes a spectacular rupture.

  • We stayed at the Remota Lodge outside Puerto Natales.
  • The Remota, designed by Chilean architect Germán del Sol, was dedicated to connecting people with the elements. All but the bedrooms allow the sound of wind and rain to penetrate.
  • Outside the Remota, we looked to the hills where some of us would ride with the gauchos.
